Your Mangalsutra: The Wonder of Indian Handicrafts

It has been said that the Mangalsutra is the most perfect of all Indian jewellery. It may be worn as a symbol of love, married life, and even fertility. The mangalsutra is a traditional piece of jewellery that includes a chain and a pendant. It's said to provide protection, dignity, and well-being for the wearer.

What is a Mangalsutra?

The mangalsutra is a symbol of love, married life, fertility, and protection. This traditional piece of jewellery includes a chain and a pendant. You may also hear it being called sutra or tirodhana. The word comes from two Sanskrit words: mangar meaning "to protect" and Tasya meaning "that which protects."

It is believed that the mangalsutra provides prosperity, dignity, and well-being for its wearer. It may be worn by any woman who has been married in Hindu customs. Some women choose to wear it on their wedding day while others have switched to more contemporary jewellery after marriage. The material typically used to make the mangalsutra is gold or silver with embellishments like pearls, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires or coloured gemstones. A round-shaped pendant with designs including anklets (also called chaandbalis), lotus flowers (usually with four petals), necklace charms (including figures like birds), coins (with Brahmins heads on one side and symbols like swastikas on the other), or bells are often attached to the end of the chain.

How to wear a Mangalsutra?

The first step to wearing this Indian handicraft is to attach the chain to your neck. This will depend on how high you want the pendant to sit. You should then pick up the end of the chain, and hold it like a loop. The end that you're holding should be in your left hand, with the other end held flat in your right hand. Take the two ends of the chain and twist them together so they form a loop. Finally, slip this loop over your head so it sits snuggly against your neck, with the pendant resting against your chest.

It's never too late for you to start wearing this intricate piece of Indian jewellery!
